MAPPING & ASSESSMENT
The Forestry Division of the State Land Department is involved in a number of forestry and wildland fire mapping activities:
Mapping & Assessment Subcommittee of the
Arizona Governor’s Forest Health Councils

The Mapping & Assessment Subcommittee (M&A) provides recommendations and guidance to the Governor’s Forest Health Councils regarding mapping and assessment issues associated with Arizona’s forest health. The subcommittee works to identify challenges that influence the efficiency and effectiveness of mapping and assessment relative to forest health issues. The group encourages projects that address specific challenges identified by subcommittee members, the Forest Health Councils, or the general public.

Arizona FIRE MAP Project
The Arizona FIRE MAP (which stands for the Arizona Fuels, Information, Restoration, and Education Mapping and Assessment Program) is a project being developed by the State Forester’s Office and includes a number of potential tools to help track, plan, and prioritize fuel treatment and other forest activities throughout Arizona. The first phase of this project involves creation of an interactive Internet map viewer (Fuel treatment Module) that will be a spatially dynamic web application focused on providing access to the geographic location of statewide fuels treatments.

Background - Mapping & Assessment Subcommittee
The Mapping and Assessment Subcommittee of the Governor’s Forest Health Advisory Council was formed in 2004 to pursue activities related to Arizona forest health issues.
The Mapping & Assessment Subcommittee (M&A) provides recommendations and guidance to the Governor’s Forest Health Councils regarding mapping and assessment issues associated with Arizona’s forest health. Though the subcommittee does not produce maps or conduct projects, it does work to identify challenges that influence the efficiency and effectiveness of mapping and assessment relative to forest health. The group encourages projects that address specific challenges identified by subcommittee members, the Forest Health Councils, or the general public.
The M&A works to encourage membership with representation across jurisdictions and interests (i.e., federal, state, tribal, local government as well as non-government organizations) and includes a core of approximately 20 active members who participate on a regular basis. The subcommittee communicates with a broader audience who contribute valuable ideas and comments on a less regular basis.
Most issues identified by the subcommittee are addressed on an informal working group basis. Those issues change over time, as do priorities. Issues currently being addressed include:
- Encouraging the development of statewide infrastructure and resources for the on-going capture and management of geospatial data critical to forest health.
- Identifying statewide fire hazard assessment standards.
- Communicating with major data providers regarding current and historical fire and fuel treatment information.
- Coordination of mapping methodologies used in CWPP, Firewise recognition, and other products used for forest health and related decision-making.
