Background Information
The fire seasons of recent years demonstrate the vulnerability of the Wildland/Urban Interface to wildfire in Arizona. In 2001 the development of the National Fire Plan created a funding process by which Congress provided grant monies to help reduce the vulnerability of Wildland/Urban Interface areas and help fire departments prepare for fire protection in these areas. Grants that have been available include the Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) Grant Program, Department of Interior Rural Fire Assistance (RFA) Grant Program and State Fire Assistance (SFA) Grants. Distribution of those grant monies have been on a competitive basis, with the Arizona Interagency Coordination Group (AIGG) evaluating applications submitted. The AICG consists of individuals from the Federal Agencies engaged in wildland fire management, the State Land Department and other Fire Service Professionals.

The US Forest Service Small Diameter Utilization (SDU) Website is Now Woody Biomass Utilization
The Small Diameter Utilization (SDU) website has become the Woody Biomass Utilization website. This signals an expansion of the information found on the website. The website will now include information about managing and using all the woody material grown in a forest, and not just the use of small diameter trees.
National Fire Plan Catalog Posted on the Web
A new section of National Association of Conservation District's (NACD’s) forestry website is devoted to keeping you informed about grants and assistance possibilities in the areas of forestry and biomass utilization. The NACD Catalog of Selected Federal Grants and Assistance Supporting the National Fire Plan can be found at http://www.forestry.nacdnet.org/biomass/Funding/
This guide is designed to assist communities in Arizona and New Mexico in developing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) in wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas at risk from wildfires. A CWPP is a pre-requisite for federally funded programs for local projects. It can be used by Firewise working groups, individual homeowners, fire departments, fire management personnel in natural resource agencies and others involved in wildfire planning and mitigation efforts. A companion handbook, “Preparing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan” was recently prepared by several national organizations to assist communities in developing a CWPP which must be prepared in order for federal agencies to consider the local community priorities as the agencies develop and implement forest management and hazardous fuels projects.
Community Wildfire Protection Plan Handbook released.
A coalition of organizations concerned about protecting communities from catastrophic wildfires has released a step-by-step handbook that guides local communities in wildfire prone areas to better prepare and reduce the future risks of catastrophic wildfires. The handbook, developed jointly by the Society of American Foresters, the National Association of State Foresters (NASF), the National Association of Counties (NACo), the Western Governors Association (WGA), and the Communities Committee of the Seventh American Forest Congress, and endorsed by the Southern Governors Association, offers a detailed description of how to create a community wildfire protection plan as allowed by the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of 2003 (HFRA). more...
